We pick up gas water heaters once the supply line has been disconnected and capped by a licensed gas fitter. We do not disconnect live gas lines.

Electric tanks are simpler — shut off the breaker. If you need us to disconnect it and carry it out, that's quoted up front, from $75.
A typical water heater contains 60–100+ lbs of steel plus copper fittings and brass valves. At current scrap metal prices, that material has real value at the recycler — which covers our cost of pickup.
